Ten companies were given top marks by attendees and expert panelists at Dow
Jones' Wireless Innovations conference this week. The conference, held in
Redwood City, Calif., featured two days of panel presentations and keynotes by
venture capital professionals and company executives, and breakout sessions in
which 80 start-up companies selected by VentureWire editors presented their

Skype-like online phone service that listens in on your conversations and serves up ads based
on what you say? A San Jose startup called Pudding has developed a technology that
can pick up on tens of thousands of keywords uttered during calls (everything from
"vacation" to "Playstation" to "doughnut"). Use your laptop to call a buddy and talk about
dinner plans, for example, and within a few seconds you'll see a Pizza Hut banner or
promotional video on our screen.
 

Company Will Monitor Phone Calls to Tailor Ads

Pudding Media, a start-up based in San Jose, Calif., is introducing an Internet phone
service today that will be supported by advertising related to what people are talking
about in their calls. The Web-based phone service is similar to
Skype's online service - consumers plug a headset and a microphone into their computers,
dial any phone number and chat away. But unlike Internet phone services that charge by the
